Epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCg) is the main catechin in green tea and provides many health benefits. High intake (>800 mg/day), either in pure form or in form of green tea extracts, especially consumed on an empty stomach can cause side effects such as liver inflammation. Therefore, the EFSA regulated EGCg in pure form as approved NOVEL FOOD (Novel Food Regulation EU 2017/2470) and EGCg containing green tea extracts in the EU regulation No. 2022/2340. Both regulations limit the daily dosage of EGCg and requires labelling warnings for it.
New regulation: Green tea extract with epigallocatechin-3-gallate.
With Regulation (EU) 2022/2340 green tea extracts have been included in Annex III Part B of Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 (amended regulation).
When used in foods, the daily dosage of epigallocatechin-3-gallate is limited to maximum 800mg.
Therefore, the maximum serving size per day must be indicated on the packaging of the food product.
In addition, a warning is required that the daily intake of 800mg of epigallocatechin-3-gallate should not be exceeded.
The amending regulation came into force on December the 21st 2022, and products containing green tea extract that have been marketed before that date are still allowed to be sold until June 21st 2023.
Aqueous green tea extracts containing epigallocatechin-3-gallate, which are consumed like traditional green tea infusion after reconstitution in beverages, are excluded from the new regulation.
